Anatomy of a Curious Mind

It’s not often one has the privilege of watching the creative process in action. Artists demur when his dealer or patron want to experience the master at his easel (as if the voyeuristic experience would give any real insight as to what might being going on)…it does not.

So it was when I had the opportunity to step into the world of one of America’s most sought after Interior Designers. Over the course of meetings and sharing ideas, he displays an uncanny understanding of where he wants to end up, if not exactly sure how to get there…at first. His process, like so many others is rooted in a keen curiosity into how things work, mix, blend or might otherwise conform to fit his aesthetic. He’s a compulsive photographer much like Warhol or perhaps more aptly, Bressai. A chronicler of things: time and space more so than “events or people”. He wants to freeze that thing of beauty or odd shape or interesting spindle so that at some future date, it will avail itself for an alternate purpose. The collection of art we created together is my collaboration with that curious mind at work. We shaped his ideas and images into layers of framing and matting. His approach on this project was the ultimate re-purposing of things that a mind conjures. The result is an original aesthetic in decorative art. The Richard Mishaan collection of art is a cross section of modes: Asian, Belle Epoque France, Classical Roman, American Architecture, Organic Industrial, Pop and Post Modern; they connect to make up this intimate look into the curious mind of an American Icon.

High Point Setup- Day 1

Ok, it’s never easy facing the the blank stare of empty walls, but we soldier on. The panic of the first day usually subsides by around the time we need a heavy coffee jolt in the afternoon, after which we go from panic to a latent fear that we’ll never get it done in time. So, here we go…800 pictures, 5000 square feet, three days and two people to get it all hung and happy. Yeeeee-haaa.

Sneak Peek at the Spring 2010 High Point Collection!

We are busy gearing up for market and wanted to give you a sneak peak at our new collection. It is Old School Redux aka “Classic Soicher Marin”. If you have been a customer of Soicher Marin for the past 55 years you know the foundation of our line has always been decorative framed art that has a timeless elegance to it.  We like to think of our art as jewelry for walls….Like a classic designer cocktail dress that will never go out of style.

Our new collection is reminiscent  of our popular collections of the late 80’s . Classic images, classic framing, and as always we try to be historically accurate when using classic images. We are going back to basics of decorative art, pure, clean design, smaller sizes, and pieces that are versatile and can fit in any room and look great with all styles of decor. These pieces define timeless elegance.

Behind the Scenes…kinda…

I thought it would be fun to show you the process of how I work.

As you all know I love to collage to make inspiration books and I don’t think I ever posted these pictures, but here I am hard at work (in my living room). I have an accordian file of all my inspiring images and I have them grouped by size and mood and I pull them all out and try to create inspiring collages to get my brain moving when it stalls out.

I was probably drinking coffee and watching some version of Real Houswives while working on these. To see the final images go here.

I thought I would do some collages for myself with some of the scrap sample prints we had laying around just for fun and they turned out pretty cool so I brought them in and scanned them and next thing you know they are framed and on their way to High Point!! It is exciting when that happens!

SM2 the framing continues…

There is a lot going on here at Soicher Marin, we’ve got some tricks up our sleeves for SM2 (yes we are still developing, it never ends) and big changes happening in general. We will be sharing it all soon and you guys are going to love it! So for now, while I am off working on the next big project (we have a new licenced collection coming out with a HOT HOT HOT designer) please enjoy these pictures of SM2 as it keeps pumping out from the factory. My favorite thing about working here is actually seeing the things I have stared at on my computer for hours and hours on end actually get printed and framed, that is when it becomes real, and there is a lot of that happening around here right now. I’m giddy with excitement to look through the stacks of art all around the office!

Hot off the Press!

Ok, so as you all probably know, we are busy working on SM2 for the upcoming fall High Point Market. We are now in the process of printing and framing the samples that will go to the showroom. I wanted to share some of those pieces with you as we get them framed. This is just the beginning of a huge line that I think you all will LOVE when you see it in person. I wish I had a bigger house to hang it all in! I am so excited and am trying to figure out which pieces I want for myself ,  it is such a hard decision!!! This is the first round that have come out of the factory many, many  more to come!

Enjoy!
