Behind the Scenes…kinda…

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I thought it would be fun to show you the process of how I work.

As you all know I love to collage to make inspiration books and I don’t think I ever posted these pictures, but here I am hard at work (in my living room). I have an accordian file of all my inspiring images and I have them grouped by size and mood and I pull them all out and try to create inspiring collages to get my brain moving when it stalls out.

I was probably drinking coffee and watching some version of Real Houswives while working on these. To see the final images go here.

I thought I would do some collages for myself with some of the scrap sample prints we had laying around just for fun and they turned out pretty cool so I brought them in and scanned them and next thing you know they are framed and on their way to High Point!! It is exciting when that happens!

SM2 the framing continues…

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

There is a lot going on here at Soicher Marin, we’ve got some tricks up our sleeves for SM2 (yes we are still developing, it never ends) and big changes happening in general. We will be sharing it all soon and you guys are going to love it! So for now, while I am off working on the next big project (we have a new licenced collection coming out with a HOT HOT HOT designer) please enjoy these pictures of SM2 as it keeps pumping out from the factory. My favorite thing about working here is actually seeing the things I have stared at on my computer for hours and hours on end actually get printed and framed, that is when it becomes real, and there is a lot of that happening around here right now. I’m giddy with excitement to look through the stacks of art all around the office!

Hot off the Press!

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Ok, so as you all probably know, we are busy working on SM2 for the upcoming fall High Point Market. We are now in the process of printing and framing the samples that will go to the showroom. I wanted to share some of those pieces with you as we get them framed. This is just the beginning of a huge line that I think you all will LOVE when you see it in person. I wish I had a bigger house to hang it all in! I am so excited and am trying to figure out which pieces I want for myself ,  it is such a hard decision!!! This is the first round that have come out of the factory many, many  more to come!

Enjoy!

Another Peak at SM2

Monday, August 10th, 2009

We have been super busy around here getting the SM2 line ready for the OctoberHigh Point Market. I know it might seem a little early, but we still have a lot to do! We have to finalize all the sizing, make sure all categories are covered, create test prints, start framing, enter everything in the database, price, catalog, build a website, re-work weak ideas, and finally decide what makes the cut for High Point and what doesn’t. Now all of that wouldn’t be a problem if it was the only thing going on, but thankfully we are really busy with projects and orders on top of that so we are all running around trying to get everything done and consuming lots of coffee (well at least I am). Luckily we have a great team around here and I get a lot of help from my fav digital ladies Allison and Amanda !!(they did most of the stuff you see below)Woo Hoo!! So lets get to the good stuff…here are some more SM2 previews. I hope you all enjoy!!!

Sketchbooks part 2

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

If you guys have been following the blog from the beginning, you might have seen the sketchbook post I did (here). Well I have been at it again. I went with very urban moody images pulled from some of my favorite magazines such as L’Officiel, Wallpaper, Another (a new favorite of mine), Interni, W, V, and the list goes on and on.
It is very relaxing for me to collage these pages and I love to go back and look through them to get inspired when everything starts to look like the same thing over and over again. I have to say my background in fashion shows by the images I pull. I love looking through the British magazines because the photography is so gritty and moody. So anyway, these are the amazing images that are inspiring me day after day! Please enjoy…

What’s on the…Table?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Here is another sneak peak into our new project, SM2. The images and work just keep on coming and coming. The interesting thing about doing a line like this is that we are not only taking images from the 10,000+ scans that we have on hand, but I have the opportunity to develop some images from scratch. They are my hand drawn sketches or textures that I create in my living room at home. The way I make textures can be very messy so I wait until my boyfriend goes to bed and then create a huge mess with black paint everywhere (it is an inexpensive kids tempra paint and is easily wiped off of glass tables and hardwood floors) then I bring all my stuff to work and scan it and start designing. It gives a fun, edgy vibe and some much needed depth to some images. These are the things I love to do, but it takes a lot of time and energy to make these pieces into something great. My plan for this week is to draw and draw and draw and see if I can come up with some killer ideas for this line. I already have quite a few done, but I am developing it further, we will see what happens…

We have added around 350 new images to the original 600 I posted a couple weeks ago and I still feel like I have barely begun. This is going to be an amazing line (in my opinion) and we want to have all the ideas out there so there is something for everyone!! I am super excited by all the fun! So here is where we are at now. Hopefully the next sneak peak will have some of the new drawings I will be working on this week :-) Please enjoy.

What’s On the Floor…er…Wall

Friday, May 29th, 2009

So we are working a huge project right now that is AMAZING!! It is our new line: SM2 by Soicher Marin targeted to a younger, less affluent audience than our regular line, but with that Soicher Marin distinctive style. My job (according to Ed) is to make it hipper, cooler, more trendy! Everything all in one! If you want edgy, we got it. If you want colorful, we got it. If you want traditional, we got it. We’ve been working on the concept for SM2 for nearly a year. We’re on plan but had to wait to get final product design going until after the Spring Soicher Marin line was done. I have been working on these ideas for a couple of weeks and already have about 600 images and I am only about 1/3 of the way done! The ideas have been building and building since the first mention of doing this line. We work great as a team going from concept to product pretty seamlessly. So, this is your first look at some of the ideas floating around so far. We will keep you posted on how it’ developing and you will be the first to know when the new line launches (look for it in July/August)!

Shhh…TOP SECRET STUFF

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

We wanted to give you another sneak peak at some of our more colorful wallpaper designs. These were all hand drawn based on some of our antique prints, but revamped to be more modern and fun. We’ve been talking for some time about launching a textile line, but right now we are just testing it out, getting feedback and deciding if this is an avenue we should go down. I love doing it and I am excited that now we have a way to share it with the world! Hopefully it will develop into more and you all can follow it from the beginning. Ok, enough with the talking…here are the pics!

When the Boss Is Away The Assistant Will Play

Friday, May 1st, 2009

So while Ed and Jen were away at HP I decided it is time to jump back into designing wallpapers. I know most of you didn’t know we did that, but it has been something we have been experimenting with for a while. I’m not talking about half drop repeats either, “go big or go home” is how we think of it. Create something that no body else is doing!

One of the great things about our little set up here is that it is just as easy to make a design for an entire wall (like creating a mural if you will) and then have the computer slice it up to hang like a wallpaper, as it is to design a repeating pattern.

Most of the time we are given the wall size and the general idea and then set free to create.
This first piece was for a 10′ h x 25′w wall, it needed to be subtle and transition from one color story to another. So here is what we came up with:

photo-1

Here are some other ideas for another area - same client. These were for 10′x12-15′ walls - all of these designs were scaled up to fit the entire wall, so it didn’t have to have a repeating pattern.

photo-3

photo-4

wallpaper-garden-views-1

Those were all created using the art we sell in our line, but that is not all we can do…

This was a project that required a unique rugged western idea, it was for a HUGE wall - to be printed on glass, and we liked it so much we hung it as a wall paper in our office in LA.

horses

Then of course we have some very graphic ideas that were all hand drawn and then scanned in and manipulated. This is only a small sampling of the ideas we have and I will be posting more in the next couple of weeks, so please enjoy!

Anything you can imagine we can create, so why keep it all to ourselves?? Let’s collaborate and make some amazing work!
